i. introduction

Werner Herzog, one of the greatest film directors in history, has accepted our invitation to lead a second experience in the middle of the Atlantic and accompany 25 pairs of young international filmmakers through the process of creating new works.
Herzog has explored the limits of the world, the mind, and truth. He has ventured deep into the jungle and into the human soul with the same discipline, brilliance, and determination. His forceful, active, and prolific body of work spans more than five decades of history, with 80 films, books, opera and theater productions attesting to the depth of his work.

Creator and Mentor

For more than 10 years, Werner Herzog has generously shared his experience, his ethics, and his vision of cinema and life, guiding more than 400 filmmakers from around the world in the creation of short works and passing on his discipline, philosophy, methods, and passion for filmmaking.
Thanks to his artistic guidance and unique contributions, the creative processes of many filmmakers have taken unexpected and irreverent turns, leaving a distinctive mark on the beginnings of their careers.
As a mentor, Werner Herzog acts as a catalyst. He accelerates and strengthens the participants’ creative processes, fostering their confidence and their ability to invent and bring one or even several works to completion in just 11 days. Time stretches and expands under the intensity of his worldview and with the creative and production mechanisms set in motion.
II. Methodology

For 11 days, Werner Herzog will advise 50 filmmakers working in 25 creative pairs on experiencing all stages of filmmaking. From the inception of the idea, through shooting and editing, to the first screening of the finished work.
Each participant will contribute their knowledge and creativity throughout the process, thus generating complex, high-quality works that experiment with form.
The Experience is open to filmmakers from all over the world, with diverse skills in writing, photography, sound, music, and editing. The 25 pairs will be formed according to the affinity of their visions and the complementarity of their knowledge, autonomy, technical and creative skills.
Working in pairs will allow them:

To improve the quality of the works, with creative contributions from each area, in all phases of the development process.

To boost experimentation in the practice of teamwork dynamics.

To generate real and meaningful meetings on both a human and artistic level that will enable for the strengthening of international working teams for future projects.

III. LOCATION

São Miguel, Azores islands, Portugal

The Azores Islands are a Portuguese archipelago made up of nine islands located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Lush and enigmatic, they are endowed with extraordinary natural, cultural, and mythological richness. São Miguel is the largest island in the archipelago, where the modernity of Ponta Delgada coexists with rural life and the imposing force of wild nature. Craters transformed into lagoons of deep greens and blues, cliffs plunging into the Atlantic, dense forests with endemic flora and fauna, tea fields, mist-filled valleys, and thermal rivers, every corner of the island conveys a sense of mystery and beauty.
Werner Herzog has filmed jungles, deserts, volcanoes, impossible mountains. But there is one place that has not yet appeared in his frame: the Azores, an archipelago where reality seems to border on dreams.
